Abstract

The development of embedded systems has encouraged innovation in automation and energy efficiency, including the development of automatic motion detection systems. This study aims to design and develop an Arduino Uno-based motion sensor system capable of detecting human movement and automatically controlling a lighting system. The system utilizes a Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor to detect motion, an Arduino Uno as the data processing unit, and an LED or lamp as the output. Additional components, including resistors, a breadboard, jumper wires, an optional LCD, and a power supply, are used to support the system. This study employed a design and prototyping method consisting of requirements analysis, hardware design, system implementation, and device testing. The PIR sensor detects infrared radiation emitted by the human body and sends a signal to the Arduino Uno, which automatically turns on the light when motion is detected. Conversely, the light automatically turns off when no motion is detected for a specified period. The testing results indicate that the system can detect movement responsively and operate stably according to its intended functionality. The integration between the PIR sensor and the Arduino Uno performed effectively, enabling the system to improve electrical energy efficiency and provide greater convenience by eliminating the need for manual switches. The Arduino Uno-based motion sensor system offers a simple and practical solution for room automation. However, the system still has limitations in terms of sensor sensitivity; therefore, further development is necessary to improve its accuracy and overall performance.
